Custom bobblehead is very popular among consumers both at home and abroad. There are various kinds of bobbleheads both in domestic and international markets. Generally, you can make your DIY custom bobblehead after you having studied the photos of your subject and prepared the required materials and tools. Here we will give you a brief introduction on how to make custom bobblehead.
First of all, you are advised to prepare some materials and tools to make bobblehead. For example, you should prepare white polymer clay, acrylic paints, artist's paintbrushes, 20-gauge wire, 24-gauge wire, aluminum foil, epoxy glue, wooden base, oven, pliers, wire cutters, photos of person to be sculpted, drill and so forth.
Second, study the photos or pictures of your subject to get the features that can mainly describe his or her character. Only when you know clearly about the human features, can you sculpture the bobblehead vividly.
Third, cut a piece of 20-gauge wire for the feet, legs and hips with the wire cutters. And use the pliers to bend the wire into a "U" shape. Wrap the lower body wire with aluminum foil. Wrap the foil at the bottom of the legs with 24 gauge wire. Then keap the polymer clay with your fingers to condition it. Use the clay to cover the aluminum foil on the lower body and smooth it with your fingers.
Fourth, you are advised to drill 2 small holes into a purchased oval wooden base positioned at the same width as the wires in the feet. Place the foot wires in the holes to hold the figure while sculpting. Push a 20-gauge wire vertically into the clay portion of the lower body. Cover it with conditioned clay and shape the torso, neck and shoulders.
Fifth, use two balls of clay to sculpt shoes for the figure. Remove the figure from the wooden base and insert the feet wire through each shoe. Then you should use epoxy glue to glue the feet into the drilled holes. Sculpt the clothing details in the clay with a craft knife and a needle tool. Sculpt arms and hands from clay and attach them to the shoulders. Make enlarged head from a ball of clay according to the photos and the facial features, haircut, ears.
Sixth, bake the head and body in a 250-degree oven for an hour and remove from the oven. Paint the body and head with acrylic paints and artist's brushes. Pay attention to detailed features, like eyes, lip color, cheeks, freckles, buttons and so forth. Try your best to pay attention to the details.
Finally, create a spring to place on top of the neck by cutting a double length of wire and fold it in half and twisting it together with pliers. Wrap the twisted wire around a pen and cover the ends of the twisted wire with polymer clay, and epoxy one end of the spring to the top of the neck. Drill the inside of the bobblehead to hollow it out enough that the head balances well on the spring. You are advised to place the bobblehead on top of the spring and glue it with epoxy.
